Incoming 6th Grader Information

Dear Skinner Families of incoming 6th graders,

We are so excited to kick off the 2024-2025 school year with our 6th grade Academy! In welcoming the Class of 2031, we are looking forward to spending time with our new Skinner Scholars. During these two days students will have the opportunity to meet teachers and staff, meet new friends, tour and learn about the building, understand “The Skinner Way,” learn how to open a locker, feel comfortable in their new environment, and have lots of opportunities to ask questions. 6th Grade Academy dates/times: August 19-20 from 8:20 am-3:20 pm. All three grades will be together for the first time on August 21st at 8:20 am. 

Class Schedules: Students will receive their class schedules on August 19th, the first day of 6th grade Academy. 

Lockers: Students will receive their lockers on August 19th. Students will not share lockers with another student. 

Technology:

  • During the first week of school, students will receive a Chromebook, Chromebook case, and charger. DPS issued chromebooks only are allowed here at Skinner (no personal computers).
  • Cell phones must be kept in lockers during school hours (8:20 am – 3:20 pm) 
  • Students are allowed to wear smart watches – as long as it is limited to using the clock function during the school day.  
  • Students are not allowed to have bluetooth earbuds at Skinner Middle School. 

Drop-off/Arrival:

  • Please drop off your child at the 6th grade Entrance on King Street (west side of the school).
  • Skinner Staff morning supervision begins at 8:10 am. 
  • If students ride bikes/skateboards/scooters to school, they will drop it off in the fenced-in area in the back of the building on 41st Street, then walk to the 6th grade entrance. It will be locked during the school day, however, individual locks are also recommended. 

Pick-up/Dismissal: 

  • Please pick your child up at the 6th grade Entrance on King Street.
  • Skinner Staff afternoon supervision ends at 3:30 pm.

Online Registration:  

  • Your child will not be able to attend 6th grade Academy until all steps of the online registration process have been completed.

  • Skinner Main Office Staff will be available to support in-person registration during the following days and times: Thursday, August 8th, Friday, August 9th, Thursday, August 15th and Friday, August 16th from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. Ring buzzer at Main Entrance on 40th Avenue to be admitted into the building.

Supplies to Bring:

  • Water bottle (no glass water bottles allowed)
  • Pens/pencils
  • Headphones (with a cord, no bluetooth headphones/earbuds allowed)
  • Beginning the second day of school, bring school-issued, fully charged chromebook and charger
  • All backpacks, drawstring bags, purses, duffle bags, fanny packs, crossbody mini bags, and tote bags must be stored in lockers during the school day. 
  • A Chromebook shoulder bag for the purpose of holding student’s chromebook and papers for class, and pens/pencils are allowed, as long as dimensions do not exceed 14.5 x 10.5 x 1.5 inches.   Messenger bag examples: 1st example, 2nd example, 3rd example 

Dress Code: 

Students are expected to attend 6th grade Academy in Skinner Dress Code. Please review the Skinner Dress Code information (Spanish version) with your student. 

Food Services: 

  • Breakfast will not be provided during 6th grade Academy. When school officially begins on August 21st, free breakfast will be available every day, beginning at 8:00 am. 
  • Free lunch will be provided during 6th grade Academy.  Students will need to type in their DPS Student ID number. Students can bring lunch from home. Microwaves will be available for students to use. 

New Family Orientation:

  • We’re offering two sessions – pick the time that works best for your schedule: August 20th, 8:30 – 9:15 am or 5:15 – 6:00 pm in the Skinner Auditorium.  It is not necessary for 6th grade students to attend New Family Orientation. 
  • This Orientation contains information beyond what was presented in May’s New Family Welcome Event.  We hope all new families can attend either option offered. 
  • Orientation Slide-deck will be shared through the Skinner Family Newsletter for families to review if unable to attend.
