Transitioning to middle school can feel like entering a whole new world, but sixth-grader Dominic is proving that with a supportive community, new curriculum and strong mentorship, every challenge brings an opportunity to thrive.
Embracing the Big Transition
On any given day at Skinner Middle School, you will find an environment where students and teachers take pride in looking out for one another. For Dominic, who came to Skinner from Trevista at Horace Mann, moving up to middle school was a milestone filled with excitement and anticipation.
On his first day, Dominic experienced a mix of happiness and nerves as he adjusted to longer school days, changing class periods and having multiple teachers. All adjustments that are already preparing him for high school. This initial anxiety quickly gave way to excitement by week two – starting with the relief of opening his locker for the first time.
"Don’t worry, don't take it too hard," Dominic advises incoming students. "It’s scary at first, but when you get through it the new experience is worth it."
Learning, Exploration and Community
Personalized learning means tailoring support to each student’s strengths and needs so every learner can thrive. Dominic experiences this approach daily in his core classes. In science, Dominic is learning about molecules with his teacher, Ms. Wickens. Science is his new favorite subject. In Language Arts, he is expanding his vocabulary and diving into a creative assignment on mythical creatures.
Mentorship is another defining pillar of Dominic’s experience at Skinner. Through the YESS program led by Mr. Dino, students across sixth, seventh and eighth grade collaborate with mentors and peers. This program fits into his class schedule year-round. They spend time practicing essential life skills, answering engaging questions and building self-confidence.
His learning journey is complemented by the DPS Spark Early Career Exploration Program. Spark partners with Denver organizations to introduce middle school students to professional environments and high-demand career paths.
Dominic balances these growth opportunities with a bright social life. He has met a ton of new friends and looks forward to playing dodgeball and trying out for the soccer team.
Looking to the Future
Behind Dominic’s drive and positive attitude is the influence of his mother who he looks up to. When asked to describe his mom in one word he says, "colorful." Dominic credits her with being smart, caring and supportive.
With a strong support system both at home and at school, Dominic is setting his sights high for his middle school years. One of his main goals is to participate in the Roaming Scorpions program, a teacher-led travel initiative that takes students abroad to explore different countries and cultures. This year they are headed to Japan.
Reflecting on his middle school experience so far, Dominic sums it up simply: "Everything here is good. I feel myself growing up."
Through personalized support, engaging programs and meaningful mentorship, Dominic is navigating middle school with confidence and preparing for a bright future ahead.
